PRIMARY PURPOSE & ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
The Database Specialist reports directly to the Senior Technical Services Manager. The role is required to have a strong understanding of database query languages, particularly SQL, and will be responsible for creating, optimizing, and maintaining queries to extract and manipulate data from various databases in order to lead data conversion-related projects. This role will also support data visualization and reporting efforts and provide insights to internal and external stakeholders.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Write and optimize complex SQL queries to retrieve data from relational databases.
- Analyze and interpret data requirements from stakeholders to develop effective query solutions.
- Collaborate with data analysts, business stakeholders and software engineers to integrate query functionality into applications.
- Maintain documentation for query writing processes and standards.
- Conduct performance tuning and optimization of existing queries for improved efficiency.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to query execution and data retrieval.
- Lead and complete client conversion projects in coordination with the implementation project team and target dates. This includes leading routine progress meetings with external clients.
- Collaborate with external and internal technical teams regarding conversion tools and methods such as data migration file mappings and translations.
- Support minor business analysis activities, such as gathering and clarifying data requirements, identifying reporting needs, and assisting with ad hoc data requests.
- Utilize Amazon QuickSight to build and maintain basic dashboards and visualizations that support internal operations and client reporting.
- Stay updated on industry best practices and emerging technologies related to database management and query writing.
OTHER JOB DUTIES
This position will participate with other staff members to contribute to and support the corporate goals, business plan, standard operating procedures and Corporate Quality Policy, and thus requires personal and professional integrity and work ethics. Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Proven experience writing complex SQL queries and working with relational databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle).
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Familiarity with business analysis practices and experience interpreting data requirements.
- Hands-on experience or working knowledge of Amazon QuickSight or similar data visualization tools.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Self-starter and quick learner who works well independently and with internal/external teams.
- Experience communicating with project stakeholders & team members about existing problems and potential solutions.
- In-depth database knowledge as well as basic programming and scripting skills.
- Knowledge of relational data modeling principles.
- Ability to pick up new data tools and concepts quickly.
EDUCATION
- A BS degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent.
